By the sea on Lilla Askerön, our farm dates back to the late 1800s. The farm is called Vilma’s Farm by the people of Lilla Askerön as it once long ago was managed by lady Vilma. We, Victoria & Johan who run Bartley Garden together, bought and moved into the farm, summer 2022. The garden is now undergoing transformation and construction and will offer several different styles but will essentially feel like a mix of English Cottage Garden and natural western Swedish.
Large parts of the garden are still a classic farm garden with open large grassy areas with old fruit trees and old fashioned perennials. An enclosed kitchen garden with orangery and raised beds, is being established. Here, the idea is that you should be able to walk and sit among vegetables, floral splendor and the buzz of bumblebees and bees. The farm’s hens roam freely in the garden from early morning until sunset, contributing both manure and eggs.
Along the entire west side of the garden, a fantastic and dramatic rock wall fades into view. Below the mountain today beautiful large oaks grow together with wild ferns. This place has begun its transformation into woodland garden with a magical feel, lovely level differences, drama and woodland with conifers, hydrangeas, rhododendrons and magnolias. Here we work together with nature and “tame” part of the forest’s vegetation by pruning and shaping selected wild trees and bushes.
In the old barn is our charming shop with a carefully selected range for both home and garden. Here you can also buy Swedish-grown perennials, shrubs and small trees. In the summer café you can enjoy coffee (“fika”) with a view of the sparkling Askeröfjord and green meadows.
We collaborate with Trädgårdsresan where we humbly thank you for the honor of being one of their selected visiting gardens in Western Sweden. Trädgårdsresan is a regional mission and a West Swedish counterpart to England’s “Yellow Book” gardening calendar.
We wish you a warm welcome to us!
